Description

This course lays the foundation to gaining competitive advantage in the Blockchain space by providing an understanding of the competitive implications and business opportunities associated with how Blockchain is affecting global industries such as finance, real estate, retail, healthcare, arts & entertainment, government, legal, food, energy, hospitality, education, insurance, and supply chain, among others. Through field experts, guest speakers, case studies, and a group project, the course aims to cover the factors and principles that govern the planning, organizing, and managing of a Blockchain based company or venture. Topics and group projects focus on discussing and understanding how Blockchain will change the way we think about money, disrupt the role central banks have in conducting monetary policy, and eliminate high-cost money transfer services and transactions costs imposed by current intermediaries. In addition to addressing the disruption in current financial markets, the course aims to uncover near-term business opportunities to bring value to society and increase social inclusion through eliminating the time-consuming and expensive notary and escrow services, shrink the settlement time of financial contracts, and transform the landscape of legal contracts and procedures. Students should leave the course with a comprehensive understanding of the global competitive landscape and core concepts of how Blockchain can affect a company's future performance.

Outcomes

At completion of the course, the student should be able to:
  • Describe the differences between various crypto currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple etc.
  • Understand the differences and relationships between Cryptocurrency, Blockchain, and Smart Contracts.
  • Comprehend the business applications and opportunities of Blockchain in various industries.
  • Grasp a basic understanding of fundraising through security tokens, utility tokes and ICOs.
  • Develop and pitch and a new entrepreneurial idea that involves the use of Blockchain, Cryptography and/or Smart Contracts.

Incompletes

Your instructor may post the interim grade Incomplete/I if at the end of the class your overall work is of passing quality but a portion could not be submitted for understandable reasons (e.g. illness). It is your responsibility to petition your instructor for permission to submit work late and to provide an explanation, and it is his or her sole decision whether to accept the explanation. If permitted, the Incomplete/I grade will be posted and a time frame defined for you to submit the missing work, ranging from one to twelve weeks. Incomplete/I grades that remain unchanged after twelve weeks will lapse to F, NP or U. Receiving an I grade entitles you to submit only the missing work your instructor has agreed to accept late, and does not allow other work to be retaken or oblige UCLA Extension to provide continuing access to course materials via Canvas. The Incomplete/I grade is not an option for courses that do not bear credit, such as 700, 800, or 900-level courses. All Grades are Final

No change of grade may be made by anyone other than the instructor, and then, only to correct clerical errors. No term grade except Incomplete may be revised by re-examination. The correction of a clerical error may be authorized only by the instructor of record communicating directly with personnel of Student and Alumni Services.
